Dark Knight Tops $1 Billion Takings At Worldwide Box Office

Batman movie The Dark Knight has taken more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the fourth highest grossing film of all time.

The action movie, starring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger, was an instant success when it was released last summer.

And now it has taken more than $1 billion in movie theatres - including $533.1 million (£372.8 million) in U.S. cinemas, and more than $468 million (£327 million) overseas.

Titanic remains the highest grossing film of all time, with takings of $1.84 billion. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is second with earnings of $1.12 billion and
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is third with $1.07 billion.
