Christmas might be over, but the Batman-related pressies just keep on coming, with Anne Hathaway breaking Chris Nolan’s traditional wall of silence in order to give us an update on what we can expect from The Dark Knight Rises.

“Gotham City is full of grace,” says Hathaway. “You look at Heath’s performance as the Joker, there was a lot of madness there but there was also a grace and he had a code there. There’s a lot of belief and codes of behavior in Gotham and my character has one, too. A lot of the way she moves and interacts with people is informed by her worldview. Chris has given us all such complex, defined, sophisticated worldviews that it’s just a matter of doing your homework and getting underneath the character’s skin.”

“I really got into the comics after I was cast,” she continues, “and I like that when she made her first appearance she meets Bruce Wayne and says ‘Let go of me or I’ll claw your eyes out,’ and he says, ‘Careful, claws in or papa spank’. So I’m glad we’ve come a long way since then. I’m not saying anything against Bob Kane, though!”

And speaking of previous incarnations of the character, Hathaway isn’t remotely concerned by comparisons to Michelle Pfeiffer et al.

“What’s come before doesn’t limit or even affect this new version,” she says. “It doesn’t affect me because each Catwoman – and this is true in the comics as well – she is defined by the context of the Gotham City created around her. Catwoman is so influenced by Gotham and whoever is creating Gotham at the time. Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman was informed by Tim Burton’s Gotham and Eartha Kitt was informed by Adam West’s Gotham. You have to live in whatever the reality of the world is and whatever Gotham is.”

Still more intriguing is the description of a scene that precedes the interview in the LA Times. Eyes away now if you don’t want to know what happens...

“Gotham City is a war zone,” begins the description. “A ruthless madman named Bane has ripped away any sense of security and the citizens, haggard and clutching suitcases with refugee anxiety, sit behind barbed wire waiting to see what will blow up next. A hooded prisoner is dragged in – it’s Bruce Wayne, one of Gotham’s most famous faces – but the eyes of the crowd go instead to the woman in black standing at the top of the staircase.”

“‘Sorry to spoil things, boys, but Bane needs these guys himself,’ says sultry Selina Kyle, played here by actress Anne Hathaway, navigating the steps with stiletto heels that, on closer inspection, turn out to have serrated edges capable of leaving nasty claw marks in a fight. She also wears high-tech goggles that, when not in use, flip up and resemble feline ears.”

So Bane and Catwoman are working together? Make of that what you will. The Dark Knight Rises is released in the UK on 20 July 2012.

For over 70 years, the criminals of Gotham City -- widely regarded as a superstitious and cowardly lot -- have been kept in check by the vigilante known as Batman. But that's about to come to a stop, as the Caped Crusader has officially announced his retirement.

At least, this version of Batman: Confirming long-standing rumors, Christian Bale revealed in an interview with The Philippine Daily Enquirer that "The Dark Knight Rises" will be the final Batman movie for both himself and director Christopher Nolan.

Even the Joker is shedding a tear.

Not that the announcement is unexpected; after all, with "the Dark Knight Rises," which just finished shooting for a July 20, 2012 release, Bale and Nolan will have made their third Batman film in the past seven years. Still, considering how successful the franchise has been -- 2008's "The Dark Knight" earned over a billion dollars worldwide by itself -- both fans and executives at Warner Bros. can be forgiven for hoping they would keep at it for a long time to come.

No such luck, according to Bale.

"I wrapped a few days ago so that will be the last time I'm taking that cowl off," Bale said "I believe the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it's all done. Everything's finished. It's me and Chris - that will be the end of that Batman era."

Of course, just because Bale and Nolan are done with Batman doesn't mean the two won't collaborate further in the future on a different project, as once Nolan gets in bed with a star (metaphorically) he likes to keep them around. Look no further than "The Dark Knight Rises" co-star Tom Hardy, who was previously featured in Nolan's sci-fi blockbuster "Inception," for proof. Not that Nolan went easy on Hardy just because they're old pals, as the role of Bane forced the up and coming star to face his greatest challenge yet: His childhood adoration of Batman.

"There's a three-year-old in me that's going, 'Oh my God that's Batman! That's Batman and he’s going to hit me! But I love Batman!,'" Hardy told Empire. "Then I look in the mirror. And I hit him back. Twice as hard."'

Which means that Bale knows exactly how fans around the world feel right now: Punched in the gut. We'll miss you, Batman.

Christian Bale Bruce Wayne The Dark Knight.jpgWITH every morsel of information about Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises amping up the anticipation, it's hard to imagine how the fanboys will last the eight months that still remain until its release next July.

Shedding a little more light on what to expect, Christian Bale tells UOL Cinema how the end of Nolan's trilogy feels: "It's like saying goodbye to an old friend. When you have the opportunity to play a character so many times, you develop another relationship with him that's more profound."

His portrayal of Batman has always been based on a concept that has developed along with Nolan, as the actor explains: "How long will you let pain and loss define your life? Walking around chasing bad guys is very heroic and attracts attention, but it all begins as a means of dealing with the pain of a huge loss."

The Dark Knight Rises marks the hour of decision for this dilemma, says Bale. "It's time for Bruce Wayne to face the pain that plagued his earlier life."

He and Nolan added another dimension that is, apparently, especially important in this last film. "We agreed that Bruce Wayne is absolutely sincere as Bruce Wayne and absolutely sincere as Batman but Bruce Wayne the playboy is a pure facade, a lie where he somehow has to control a side of his soul that is not really under control. In fact, only Alfred even knows who he is. "

Giving more precise information - beware mild spoilers - director Christopher Nolan reveals to Empire: "It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state.

With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we're testing Batman both physically as well as mentally. In terms of finishing our story and increasing its scope, we were trying to craft an epic."

Nolan said he chose Bane, played by Tom Hardy, because he wanted something more than a repeat of the mind games of the Joker: "When you're looking to continue the story - in this case finish Bruce Wayne and Batman's story, as we see it - then you certainly don't want a watered-down version of a character you've already done. You want a different archetype. What Bane represents in the comics is the ultimate physical villain."

Hardy says of his character: "He's brutal. He's a big dude who's incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It's not about fighting, it's about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it's nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action."

Costume designer Lindy Hemming explained the character's mask: "He was injured early in his story. He's suffering from pain and he needs gas to survive. He cannot survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at the back where there are two canisters of whatever it is... the anaesthetic."

Christopher Nolan The Dark Knight holding camera.jpgAnd Gary Oldman spoke to MTV, offering: "There's a conclusion. [Nolan] touches on the first film and weaves it in. It resolves. I think it's a trilogy, it's just great. The story is terrific, it's just epic."

"I think it was smart of Chris to go with a lesser-known villain. We love the Joker but Heath's performance was so dazzling that you got to think, 'How the hell do I top it?' Instead of going for Riddler, instead of going for Penguin, he's gone a slightly different way with the story."

We have seen from set pictures and videos that the resulting story does feature some large-scale conflict and - rather controversially - Nolan was rumoured to be incorporating the Occupy Wall Street anti-capitalism protests into the production.

That didn't happen, and Matthew Modine, who plays a character called Nixon, told IndieWire just why: "The wisdom of Christopher Nolan and his incredible team was that, while it seemed like a good idea to give the protesters an opportunity for work, to give them money, it would send a terrible message.

"At the end of the day, we're making a movie. What's happening down there is more important than that. To co-opt what's happening there and around the country... we didn't want to trivialise it. It was more important to respect what they're doing than to do anything that could potentially trivialise the political situation downtown."

        'Dark Knight Rises' not shooting at Occupy Wall Street

If you were hoping that you might see Batman join the fight with Occupy Wall Street, don’t go looking for the bat signal just yet. In fact, you would probably have better luck holding out for Spider-Man swooping in from Broadway’s Turn Off The Dark to save the day.

While Christopher Nolan will begin filming portions of The Dark Knight Rises in New York City over the span of the next two weeks, a Warner Bros., rep tells EW that there are no plans to shoot in Zuccotti Park, the home base for the OWS movement. After an open casting call for NYC extras for the project hit the web, rumors swirled that the project could be filming very close to, if not directly in, Zuccotti Park. Last week an anonymous source told the LA Times, “Cast members have been told the shoot could include scenes shot at the Occupy Wall Street protests” and that Nolan could be using “the protests as a backdrop or a stand-in for something that already exists in the film,” but that simply doesn’t seem to be the case.

The eagerly-anticipated film — which has gone under the code name Magnus Rex and is listed as a current production by The City of New York Mayor’s Office of Film Theatre & Broadcasting — had been scheduled to shoot in NYC months before the OWS uprising began.

So, while OWS and its Zuccotti Park residents (who seem to be attempting to stay put well until The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters) may not be immortalized in the comic book follow-up, there’s still plenty of interest elsewhere in catching the social, financial, and political crusade on film. MTV announced yesterday that they will air an episode of their documentary series True Life and feature “three young people” involved in Occupy Wall Street in New York City. None of whom, we’re guessing, will be Bruce Wayne.

Presenting our weekly round-up of all the big news stories from the world of movie superheroes…

It seems that Tom Cruise’s latest impossible mission, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, will enjoy a hefty IMAX opening when it hits North America this December, with /Film breaking the news that the sequel will be accompanied by a six-minute prologue for Christopher Nolan’s final Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Warner Bros. employed the same tactic back in 2007, attaching the opening sequence of The Dark Knight to the post-apocalyptic Will Smith actioner I Am Legend and giving us our first glimpse of Heath Ledger’s Joker in action. Assuming Nolan follows suit and takes the opportunity to introduce Bane, then my guess is we’ll get some kind of origin montage that makes use of the footage shot in India back in May when Josh Pence filmed scenes as a young Ra’s al Ghul alongside Tom Hardy.

In other news from TDKR camp, the production is set to finish up in Los Angeles this coming week before heading to New York for 14 days, with the LA Times reporting that the shoot could incorporate the current Occupy Wall Street protests, either as “a backdrop or a stand-in for something that already exists in the film.” Meanwhile, CosmicBookNews posted some ‘exclusive rumours’ claiming that the story for The Dark Knight Rises will incorporate elements of Batman: KnightFall, Batman: Year One and Batman: Dark Victory, which if true, adds further weight to all the speculation over the inclusion of Robin. I’d be surprised if this turned out to be true, but I do think that Christian Bale’s Dark Knight won’t be the only crime-fighter taking to the streets of Gotham next July (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I’m looking at you).

The New York Comic Con took place last weekend and the big talking point for fans was Marvel’s Avengers panel, which featured Marvel president Kevin Feige along with cast members Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Evans (Captain America) and surprise guest Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner). ComicBookMovie put together a summary of the highlights (via Cinemablend and Newsarama), which included a scene between Banner and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and montage of footage cut around a conversation between Loki and Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). The Avengers wasn’t the only topic of conversation from Kevin Feige at the NYCC, who went on to discuss what he referred to as ‘Phase Two’ when asked about the status of the potential Guardians of the Galaxy and Inhumans movies. Feige then elaborated on Marvel’s ‘Phase Two’ to IGN: “we have started working on the bones and structure and threading for a phase two. It does start with Iron Man 3 and if it all works – which we hope it does – culminates in another Avengers film.” So, what can we expect from this second batch of films? Well, we already have Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 to look forward to in 2013, and assuming the Avengers won’t assemble for a sequel until 2015 at the very earliest (and more likely 2016), we can probably expect a minimum of four more movies on top of that. Feige made specific reference to Captain America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man (which, according to Joe Cornish, is now undergoing another draft) and Doctor Strange, and you'd have to expect that a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie featuring the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson must also surely be within the realms of possibility.

Shifting to Marvel’s small-screen endeavours, we already knew that Disney’s ABC Studios were developing the TV series AKA Jessica Jones and The Hulk (which, according to Jeph Loeb, will feature The Avengers' version of Bruce Banner’s alter-ego), and now Variety have revealed that Fox have purchased a series based upon The Punisher. According to the article, “Fox’s smallscreen version of ‘Punisher’ will focus on NYPD detective Frank Castle, whose alter ego is that of a vigilante seeking justice for those failed by the court system.” So, it’s basically Dexter, then. Now, I’m a fan of the character and I could just about buy him as a detective rather than a veteran, but unless his family get slaughtered by the mob, then he's not The Punisher as far as I’m concerned.

Although Sony opted against bringing The Amazing Spider-Man to the Big Apple, the studio did take the opportunity to deliver an extended trailer and some behind-the-scenes footage from the upcoming Nicolas Cage sequel/reboot Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, while directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor also responded to the recent PG-13 classification from the MPAA, describing it as ‘PG-16’ and stating that “you can burn as many people as you want.” Take a look at a summary of the Ghost Rider panel at ComicBookMovie (via the live blog at SuperHeroHype), and check out an interview with Neveldine/Taylor over at io9, during which the duo discuss the on-set dynamics between Cage and Idris Elba, along with their depiction of the villain, Blackout (Johnny Whitworth).

Wrapping up the best of the rest...

…According to Russell Crowe, Henry Cavill’s Superman won’t be the only ‘-El’ going up against Michael Shannon’s General Zod in Man of Steel. Crowe has been tweeting from the set this past week, announcing that he’s spent “umpteen hours fighting Michael Shannon” in his role as Superman’s Kryptonian father, Jor-El, and that it’s “hard to tell who wins”. I think we can hazard a pretty good guess…

…Although director Matthew Vaughn and screenwriter Jane Goldman have remained non-committal over the possibility of a sequel to Kick-Ass, Chloë Moretz has hinted at Kick-Ass 2 becoming a reality, telling MTV that: “I can't say anything, but a little bit of news is coming. Just something, Something we got up our sleeves.” Whether that ‘we’ refers to cast and crew remains unclear…

…X-Men: First Class finally comes to DVD and Blu-ray here in the U.K. on October 31st and The Sun posted a behind-the-scenes video from the prequel earlier this week, which looks at Hugh Jackman’s brief cameo as Wolverine. U.K. fans may also want to check out these two clips from Marvel’s new X-Men anime, which premiered in the United States last night…

…Meanwhile our friends in the U.S. will be able to get their hands on the home-entertainment release of Captain America: The First Avenger from Tuesday, and a host of promotional videos have popped up this past week – take a look at a deleted scene featuring the Howling Commandos, a ‘Skinny Steve’ featurette and a brief interview with Jack Kirby on the creation of the character, along with the Marvel One-Shot, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Thor’s Hammer…

…DC animation legend Bruce Timm took part in a video interview with Newsarama at the NYCC, in which he discussed the development of Batman: Year One and the accompanying Catwoman short. In other DCAU-linked news, Mark Hamill also announced his retirement as the voice of the Joker following his work on the absolutely immense Batman: Arkham City…

…And finally, in addition to previewing his Lizard voice from The Amazing Spider-Man to MTV, Rhys Ifans also spoke briefly about his time on the film to the Orlando Sentinel, stating that: “I put my whole body into ‘Spider-Man’. It was a thrill to work with Marc Webb. He's like Roland Emmerich. He's doing blockbusters, but he has an 'indie' heart, an indie character-oriented sensibility.” Yes, that’s Roland Emmerich. The Roland Emmerich responsible for arthouse ‘indies’ such as Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 10,000 BC and 2012. Hmm... I’m pretty sure the comparison is meant as a compliment, but I have to say I’d rather see Sam Raimi do Spider-Man than Roland Emmerich.

Batman bosses have kept fans guessing with how Anne Hathaway is going to portray Catwoman in upcoming movie The Dark Knight Rises.

And now, with the first official photo of the actress in character, it seems Catwoman is going to be tougher than ever in the sequel.

While Hathaway's outfit can't really be seen, it appears the 28-year-old actress is wearing a black leather catsuit, with a zip up the front, teamed with a pair of black goggles and lashings of red lipstick.

The shot shows Catwoman on a motorbike, which looks very similar to the one owned by Batman in the last film, The Dark Knight Rises.

Very little information has been revealed about the storyline of the new film, in which Hathaway stars as Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman.

However, a source recently told Hollywoodlife.com of Anne's Catwoman costume: 'Anne's outfit is more tactical, like the comic book, than the previous Batman movies.

'She will definitely be wearing the goggles, and it's going to be less sexy than Halle Berry and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman costumes. She's going to look more like a robber.'

Hathaway was yesterday spotted on the set of the new film, showing off her legs in a pair of tiny black shorts.

Anne, who was wearing heavy make-up, chatted with a member of the production staff while she stretched her legs during a spot of down time.

It looks like the Oscars hostess has been working hard to get in shape for the final part of Christopher Nolan's hit trilogy.

A source told the Mail: 'Anne is working out five days a week. She's taking it very seriously and wants her body in tip-top condition.

'Secretly she hopes to upstage Halle Berry, who last played Catwoman. She's doing dance classes, weight-training and cardio - she wants to be the sexiest Catwoman ever.'

And it has paid off as she looked lithe and supple, with not a single trace of fat on show as she enjoyed the fresh air in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania today.

But she was not the only glamorous lady strutting her stuff during another day of hectic shooting.

Marion Cotillard was also looking splendid, although unfortunately she was more covered up in a costume that made up of trousers and wine-coloured jacket.

She is playing Miranda Tate in the film, an ally of Bruce Wayne's who works on the board of his company.

Although the ladies on set provided the glamour, it was the stunt men who generated the excitement.

One was seen shooting down a set of stairs in a exotically-designed motorbike during one of the more thrilling moments of the day.

Yesterday, we got a nice video clip of Anne Hathaway on the set of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. It was our first look at Selina Kyle/Catwoman and after a series of images from the Pittsburgh set, I guess Warner Brothers had had enough and decided to release an official image. Below is the first shot of Anne as Catwoman, riding what appears to be a Bat-cycle similar to the one seen in THE DARK KNIGHT. Not too much going on here and we don’t really get a great look of the costume, but it lends credence to the notion that Catwoman and Batman team up at some point.

The third and final Batman film stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard and Juno Temple. The Christopher Nolan directed film hits theaters July 20th, 2012.

I’m at the junket for Pixar’s Cars 2 and a few moments ago, I got to participate in a video press conference with Sir Michael Caine. Since he’s currently filming director Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises in London right now, the only way he could talk to us was using video conferencing.
In the coming days I’ll have the full transcript online, but during the press conference, I was able to ask how filming on The Dark Knight Rises has been going. As you might imagine, he was pretty guarded with his answer, but at the very beginning, he might have revealed a spoiler. For what he said, hit the jump.

Here’s my question and his answer:
Collider: A lot of us are excited to see you returning as Alfred in The Dark Knight Rises. I know Mr. Nolan is very guarded about the story, but can you at least tell us how filming has been going so far?
Caine: It’s fantastic. I started filming last week and I film next week. As the butler, I do a load of filming at the beginning, and everybody goes off and does all the adventures and they all come home shot to pieces and I patch them together when they all get back. Christopher Nolan, I think, is one of the greatest directors in the world and I’ve been lucky enough…this is my fifth movie with him. It’s such a pleasure to work with him and he’s so clever. We’ve all signed the Official Secrets Act. I’m lucky to be able to tell you the title of the movie. I remember I did an interview and someone said to me, “What are you doing next?” I said, “I’m doing Batman.” I saw Chris and he said, “Why did you tell them you were doing Batman?” I said, “Because I am.” He said, “You’re supposed to keep it secret.” I said, “I couldn’t keep that a secret.” Let me tell you…the plot is extraordinary…really extraordinary. I know why he wants to keep it a secret. You really need not to know till you see the movie.

The thing to focus on is:
“I do a load of filming at the beginning, and everybody goes off and does all the adventures and they all come home shot to pieces and I patch them together when they all get back. “

You have to wonder what “they all come home” actually means. Does this mean Batman has a partner like a Robin? Or maybe he’s partnered with Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman? Perhaps it’s nothing…but I know how everyone is trying to put together the secrets of the film and perhaps this is a new clue. What do you all think? Is this a mistake in the way he answered or is this a spoiler?

Now I'm not 100% positive whether this is the official logo for the Man of Steel movie or not. The Warner Bros. profile page on the website for the Licensing Expo website did list Man of Steel, I think this might just be something to throw out there to let fans know that the movie is still alive and well.

The population of Gotham City continues to grow, as "The Dark Knight Rises" has added two more actors to its swelling ranks.

Brett Cullen ("Lost") and Chris Ellis ("Catch Me If You Can") have signed on to director Christopher Nolan's third "Batman" film, Variety reports. Cullen is set to play a judge and Ellis will portray a priest. The two men join Matthew Modine, Tom Conti and Joey King, whose castings were announced on Friday.

Cullen is perhaps best known for his small but integral role in "Lost" as Goodwin, a member of the Others. More recently, he played Dakota Fanning's father in "The Runaways" and will be seen in this summer's "Monte Carlo," as well as the forthcoming "Red Dawn." Ellis portrayed a special agent opposite Tom Hanks in "Catch Me If You Can" and took on a short arc on Fox's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." Both men also appeared in Ron Howard's "Apollo 13."

These newcomers join Christian Bale, who again plays the lead roles of Bruce Wayne and Batman, plus Michael Caine as Wayne's butler and confidant, Alfred; Gary Oldman as Police Commissioner Gordon; and Morgan Freeman as Wayne's right-hand man, Lucius Fox. Other new faces in the cast include Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (who becomes Catwoman in comic-book lore), Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Tom Hardy as Bane. We got our first look at Bane — his freaky head mask, his hulking frame — on Friday, when Warner Bros. kicked off a viral marketing campaign that led to the discovery of a photo of the villain.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing Alberto Falcone in Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises. It has long been speculated what role Joseph Gordon-Levitt would play in Christopher Nolan’s 2012 Batman film. Nolan has always sought to ground his Batman films in reality even though the roots of his property are those of a comic book. Alberto Falcone is

the son of Mafia chieftain Carmine Falcone, the character Tom Wilkinson played in “Batman Begins.”

Alberto Falcone, who is also known as The Holiday Killer, would bring Nolan’s superhero trilogy full-circle. The character fits with the helmer’s stated intentions for continuity and preference to pit the Caped Crusader against “realistic” villains, as opposed to cartoonish nemeses such as Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy, who Batman battled in Joel Schumacher‘s 1997 misfire “Batman and Robin.”

This fits in with some of the original rumors for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s role in The Dark Knight Rises

The original rumor (which was nothing more than, now very poignant, fan conjecture at the time) was that Falcone comes back to Gotham to try and reclaim the city Batman helped take from his father. Also, it made sense because Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) believes Carmine Falcone is her father in the Batman/Catwoman storyline Catwoman: When in Rome.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s casting was kept alive by his current schedule availability

Since Gordon-Levitt was first reported last month as being in talks for “Dark Knight,” he hasn’t signed on for any more projects, and his summer remains wide open.

Gordon-Levitt recently wrapped David Koepp‘s thriller “Premium Rush,” which Columbia plans to open Jan. 13. He’s currently filming Rian Johnson‘s sci-fi pic “Looper,” which co-stars Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt.

I am looking forward to seeing Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a world created by Christopher Nolan again. We already spoke of Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy being cast in the film here: The Dark Knight Rises casting: Anne Hathaway (Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane). Christian Bale recently disclosed that he’s approaching his third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, as if it will be his last time playing the caped crusader on the big screen — and the film’s director, Christopher Nolan, is taking the same view. In an interview with EW, Nolan called The Dark Knight Rises “the last chapter of our Batman saga.” When the helmer was asked if any part of him wished he was tackling another original script instead of another Batman sequel in the wake of Inception’s blockbuster grosses (over $820 million worldwide) and Oscar buzz, Nolan replied: “No, it’s exactly the opposite. I feel very glad that I’m doing another Batman film. I think it would have been daunting to sit down and write an original script after Inception. I love working within the realm and rules of our Batman world. It’s kind of nice to have someplace to go that I’m super-excited about.” He added that Inception’s success allows him to tackle another Batman without any sense of needing to prove himself: “I must say that I’m glad — I’m very, very glad — to be embarking on the last chapter of our Batman saga without any sense of obligation or duty to the studio. They did very well with Inception. So I’m able to go into finishing our story in a very enthusiastic way.”
For anyone hoping that Nolan might plunge deeper into the world he created with Inception in the form of a sequel, the filmmaker says… Maybe? But there will be a videogame: “I always imagined Inception to be a world where a lot of other stories could take place,” says Nolan. “At the moment, the only direction we’re channeling that is by developing a videogame set in the world.” He declined to elaborate on details or time table, only to say that he was developing the game with a team of collaborators and that it was “a longer-term proposition.” He calls the medium of videogames “something I’ve wanted to explore” — and certainly a veritable massive multiplayer online role playing game (as imagined by Carl Jung) would seem to be a perfect for the interactive, non-linear dream world of Inception. “As for [movie] sequels,” he says, “it’s not something I want to say no to, but it’s not something I’ve given a lot of thought about.”
But let’s get to the question we’ve been asking since Inception premiered last July and promptly cooked our noodle [and SPOILER ALERT for anyone who missed the movie in theaters and has been waiting until the DVD release next week to see it for the first time]: Did the top stop spinning or what? “I’ve been asked the question more times than I’ve ever been asked any other question about any other film I’ve made,” Nolan laughs. “That’s definitely the question. It keeps coming back to that. What’s funny to me is that people really do expect me to answer it.”
This surprises him, he says, because he thought he had firmly established with his equally trippy breakthrough flick Memento that he likes to remain mum on matters of “proper” interpretation. “With this film, though, people really think I’m going to tell, ” he says. “I get a lot of questions like, ‘Okay, did this thing earlier in the film mean that it’s all true, or does this other thing at another point in the film mean that it’s all a dream?’” Nolan says there’s no definitive answer to that question, because then his choice at the end of the movie to cut away from the spinning top — used by lead character Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) to know whether he’s in the real world (the top falls) or the dream world (the top doesn’t) — would have been an error on his part. “There can’t be anything in the film that tells you one way or another because then the ambiguity at the end of the film would just be a mistake,” he says. “It would represent a failure of the film to communicate something. But it’s not a mistake. I put that cut there at the end, imposing an ambiguity from outside the film. That always felt the right ending to me — it always felt like the appropriate ‘kick’ to me….The real point of the scene — and this is what I tell people — is that Cobb isn’t looking at the top. He’s looking at his kids. He’s left it behind. That’s the emotional significance of the thing.”

Christian Bale isn’t sure that he’ll be heading back to Gotham after The Dark Knight Rises. “This will be, I believe, until Chris [Nolan] says different, the last time I’ll be playing Batman,” Bale told E!. “Absolutely, we want to go all out with it.”
“I don’t even know if [The Dark Knight Rises is] the right title,” Bale said. “Until Chris tells me, I don’t believe it.”
Bale was not expected to play Batman forever; his contract called for three films. But since the actual plot details for TDKR – if that is it’s real name — are so tantalizingly vague, Bale’s confirmation of something — anything — concrete attracts some added significance.

With the $810m smash that was Inception now firmly behind him, Christopher Nolan is back in Gotham, working with brother Jonathan to nugget out the script for The Dark Knight Rises, which will be landing on its cast members' doorsteps in January.
Alfred himself, Michael Caine, shared that news with Empire, revealing that the film's shoot will kick off in the summer and be done and dusted in six months. “Emma [Thomas], the producer, said we'd get the script in January. Christopher said: 'Script in January, shoot in May, finish in November.'"
Until then the confirmed cast members remain - fittingly - in the dark. "Christopher is the most secretive guy in the world," Caine said, "he won't tell you anything." Expect more casting news to follow in the very near future. Hollywood bosses have stepped in to silence speculation about the next Batman movie - insisting there isn't even a script yet for the superhero sequel.

Rumours about the planned follow-up to The Dark Knight have been plentiful ever since the blockbuster hit cinemas in 2008.

Internet gossip sites have been rife with reports about the possible addition of feline femme fatale Catwoman to the next picture in Christopher Nolan's film franchise, with a British tabloid reporting over the weekend (22-23Aug) that Megan Fox is in negotiations to take the coveted role.

Angelina Jolie, Cher and Kate Beckinsale have also been linked to the part, while Shia Labeouf, Johnny Depp and Eddie Murphy have also been in rumoured negotiations concerning the picture.

Movie chiefs have confirmed they do want to shoot another Batman movie, but they are adamant the project is in the very early stages and producers haven't even discussed casting yet.

A representative for the Warner Bros. film studio tells People.com, "It's rumour. It's not true. There is no script. There is no project to be cast in." »

Christian Bale will slip back into his rubber Batsuit next year to begin shooting the sequel to The Dark Knight.
The Hollywood actor has confirmed he will return as Bruce Wayne/Batman for the third time in director Christopher Nolan's forthcoming film, but a production schedule had yet to be released.
However, Bale's The Dark Knight co-star Gary Oldman, who portrays Commissioner Gordon in the movie adaptations, broke the news of the return of the Caped Crusader to fans at the annual Comic-Con in San Diego, California on Friday.
He told fans, "The next Batman is shooting next year. It's at least two years away. But you didn't hear it from me!"

Batman movie The Dark Knight has added five more trophies to its impressive haul of prizes - scooping the top accolades at the Annual Saturn Awards.

The film, starring Christian Bale, came out on top at the ceremony in Burbank, California on Wednesday night, which is hosted by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.

The Dark Knight was named Best Action-Adventure Thriller, while late star Heath Ledger was honoured posthumously as Best Supporting Actor. The sequel also took prizes for its script, special effects and score.

Comic book action movie Iron Man triumphed in three categories, including Best Science Fiction Film, Best Director for Jon Favreau, and Best Actor for Robert Downey Jr.

Angelina Jolie took the Best Actress trophy for Changeling and her partner Brad Pitt's movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, landed three awards - seeing off competition from Twilight to be named Best Fantasy Film.

The picture also garnered a Best Supporting Actress honour for Tilda Swinton and a prize for its make-up effects.

Will Smith's son, Jaden Christopher Smith, was honoured with the Best Performance by a Younger Actor award for his turn in The Day the Earth Stood Still, Swedish vampire horror Let the Right One In scored Best International Film, while Wall-e was Best Animated Film.

In the TV awards, mystery drama Lost was named Best TV show and Battlestar Galactica landed the Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series honour, as well as acting prizes for stars Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell.

Veteran Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy was handed the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony.

L'acteur s'est blessé lors d'une excursion, en début d'année, et s'est retrouvé avec l'index coupé. Il en gardera une cicatrice toute sa vie.

Mais Christian Bale avoue qu'il a à peine senti sa blessure et ne s'est rendu compte de la gravité de celle-ci que lorsqu'il a vu sa main en sang.

Il explique: "J'ai eu un sale accident de moto et j'ai eu le bout du doigt coupé. J'ai perdu le bout de mon doigt mais ça ne m'a pas fait mal. Je n'arrêtais pas de regarder et de me demander: "Pourquoi est-ce que ça me fait mal ?" Le corps est étonnant. Le doigt était horrible. Les gens autour de moi ont failli tomber dans les pommes."

Bale Avoided TV News After Ledger's Death

Christian Bale refused to watch the news after his The Dark Knight co-star Heath Ledger died - fearing gossipy coverage would tarnish his memories of his friend.

Bale was left stunned after Ledger, who played the villainous Joker to his Batman in the 2008 blockbuster, died from an accidental prescription drug overdose in January 2008.

But he chose to block out all reports about his friend's tragic passing - because he didn't want to hear uninformed outsiders speculate about Ledger's death.

He tells Esquire magazine, "I paid no attention to it. I knew him, I knew the family and why the hell would I sit there listening to idiots who don't know anything at all? I literally didn't read anything, didn't watch anything (after he died).

"If I happened to be watching anything that came on, I switched over straight away. It's incredible the way the voyeuristic outlook is accepted as news."

And Bale still mourns Ledger's untimely death - because the Australian star was one of the few actors whose intensity and passion matched his own on set.

He adds: "Many times I'll work with actors and I can tell they're thinking, 'What are you doing? Why are you going that far with it?' or 'You're nuts!' With Heath, I could feel him going, 'I love it!'

"It felt like we were really pushing each other on, to the limits of where you can go with it. He was a good guy. There's not a lot of actors who I stay in touch with. But Heath was one of them."

Bale Slices Finger In Biking Accident

British actor Christian Bale has been left with a disfigured finger after slicing off the top of the digit in a dirt-biking accident.

The Dark Knight star hurt himself during an action excursion earlier this year and has been left with a mangled left index finger which will be scarred for life.

But Bale admits he barely felt the injury - and didn't realise how serious it was until he caught sight of his bloodied hand.

He says, "I had a dirt-biking accident and chopped it off at the end. You have something as extreme as that - you've lost the end of your finger - but it didn't hurt.

"I just kept looking at it, going, 'Why is that not hurting?' The body's amazing. It (the finger) looks horrible. Everyone else almost faints looking at it."

Michael Caine Says The Riddler Is next Batman Villain

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight’s Michael Caine sat down for a Q&A recently with Collider to promote his new film Is There Anybody There? in Los Angeles. During the interview he spoke about Heath Ledger, Christopher Nolan and who he thinks the villain is going to be in the the next Batman film. Check out the Bat-related exurb below.

Q: Are you not expecting there to be a third Batman?

MC: Well Christopher is doing a picture called Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio which I saw on the Internet. So I imagine another Batman is quite a long way away.

Q: What kinds of films and roles are you drawn to at this point in your career? Is it smaller films?

MC: It’s just the writing. Like Dark Knight, I chose a long time ago with Batman Begins but that was because of Christopher Nolan. But also, on this film, this John Crowley who is a brilliant young Irish director that I saw two small films that he did and I loved them. And then on Harry Brown, there’s a young English director called Daniel Barber and I saw a small film that he did. He actually got nominated for an Academy Award for that film and I forget the bloody title (The Tonto Woman). I like working with younger directors as I’m going to do these small films. A young director can get a chance in a small, cheap film. He can’t get a chance in a big one.

Q: Weren’t you signed for 3 Batmans?

MC: Yes, if they do another one, I’ll probably be the butler. I hope I’m still alive. Michael Goth, who played Batman before me, the last time he played in Batman he was 84.

Q: Didn’t Christopher Nolan do this the last time also? He wanted to make another film in between?

MC: He did. I was in that too. The Prestige. (Laughs) Christopher doesn’t make pictures without me.

Q: Do you think he’ll come around to doing a third one?

MC: I would imagine so. That would be probably The Riddler.

Q: What did Heath Ledger’s victory at the Oscars mean to you in terms of his legacy?

MC: I thought it was very important for his family as well. I was a big fan of his from the first time I met him. I’d never met him before. I met him on the set where he invades the party we’re having. I’m standing in front of the lift and I’m expected to greet people and there’s all these gangs behind him and he came in. But, before that, I’d met him obviously on the set and we were chatting. He had this make-up on and I was saying how fantastic I thought it was. We were just chatting quietly and then they said, “We’re ready to shoot.” And I had never seen the performance. We were just talking, you know. And then he came out the elevator and I was absolutely stunned by the way he did it and the energy that went into it. And then when I saw the movie, there’s an opening monologue and a closing monologue that he does which I felt if anybody’s going to better that and get an Academy Award above him, I would pay good money to see that and nobody did beat him. I’m so pleased.

Q: That will be a tough act to follow for anyone who plays the Riddler though?

MC: Yeah, I thought it would be a tough act to follow for anybody who played against The Joker after Jack Nicholson. (Laughs) You know what I’m saying? Heath is The Joker. We’ll see.

Caine: 'Batman Will Battle The Riddler'

Batman will take on villain The Riddler in the next instalment of the superhero franchise, according to the Caped Crusader's butler Sir Michael Caine.

The British star of both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight has let it slip that his movie boss' next foe will "probably be The Riddler" - a role made famous on screen by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever and on TV by Frank Gorshin, who died in 2005.

Johnny Depp and Eddie Murphy are both in the frame for the role, according to Hollywood gossips.

Caine has no idea who will be cast, but is hoping for a performance to rival Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Caine tells People.com, "I thought it (The Joker character) was going to be a tough job for anyone who played the role after Jack Nicholson (in 1989's Batman). Now Heath is the Joker."
